Kochi Fish Cemetery - a warning
You will find a fish cemetery on display at Fort Kochi South Beach, behind the Dutch cemetary.

It's a beautiful installation created by artists Manoj Brahmamangalam and Pramod Gopalakrishnanan, described as "a warning, for the sustenance of life".
Dr V Kripa, head of Fishery Environmental and Management Division principal scientist at the CMFRI says. “Plastic has become one of the biggest threats to aquatic ecosystems and their resources...Large plastic sheets have been found in the stomach of mackerel, tuna, queen fish, ribbon fish and whale, which clearly indicates that plastic has entered our marine food chain"
It beautifully illustrates the damage done to our ecosystem by the dumping of plastic waste on land, but is it necessary? Don't we know this by now, or is it a case of a problem being seen as "out of sight, out of mind...?"

Hotel dreams Del Estrocho
Hotel Dreams Del Estrocho
Facing the police flag kicking the sky,
car exhausts trails dividing the square, banditos on the sly
on the 8th floor, facing away from the view,
basking in bright weather, coaches with penguins all taunting you,
with cloud soft forms of what could have been,
all the leopard seals and wildlife and icebergs unseen.
Words formed, above the mute phone,
with intimate touch blazing across the screen,
bald truth reminding you of the obscene
illusion that you are ever alone

Londonium 2016 - Mindful Writing
boxes blinking bright in
hoarded sunlight, corralled by
black cabs,
diverted the famous grey
flows of metamorphic concrete
layered down.
the Romans river anchored
offshore, the sign of the skyscraper
follows the length of the
high Thames

Mindful writing is the practice of capturing a moment in writing, described by Satya Robyn as a small stone. Satya describes a small stone as a "short piece of writing that precisely captures a fully-engaged moment".
I think the practice is a terrific way of learning to pay attention. A great description of how to do this very simple exercise can be found here.

The year of the Horse
Happy new year!
So now we are entering the year of the horse, quite an important animal for many cultures
The new year parade in Chatham high street was very well attended, and there was quite a lot of noise, movement and energy from the parade.
This is something that I associate with the horse. Energy, power, the need to explore and travel. This can be on an internal/mental/spiritual as well as an external/physical journey. Quite an interesting image for someone to work with, especially at the beginning of Spring.
The question is, what do you want to do with your year? Are you sure of where you are going?
For me, my direction is leading to the St Patrick's parade. It is, and has been an all consuming passion for me over the last year. The Chinese new year has provided the template for our event, so I'm very conscious of what I can learn from attending. I am also very aware that it's coming up to four weeks before our own parade. Where has the time gone?

Drawing a straight line .... Failure. Who cares?
OK, overwhelmed by an excess of enthusiasm, red wine and sunshine I actually drew some stuff. Yes, it has taken me a whole blasted week of being here in Italy to work up the courage to break out my pencil. But what exactly was I waiting for? Permission?
So I found a nice little place, a shady spot in the Giardino di Boboli and I just did it. I had to do a few, because to be quite honest the first was childish, awful with no respect for perspective.
But you know what? The sun was shining, and I was in Florence and I probably will never get back here again. And it felt so nice just generally draweing, and shading and looking. I felt like I really connected...
... and no one could see what I was drawing so they don't know how naive the style was (yes I am going with that rather than with could not be bothered to spend more than 10 minutes at a time doing stuff)
But you know what? I really enjoyed it. The question is .... why have I waited so long to do this, simply for fun? What are you not allowing yourself to do, simply because you will not allow yourself to be rubbish... naive.... a beginner....?
